Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation Honors Allan Vann
At the 26th annual Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation Coping & Caring Conference, held on January 30th at the Hilton Hotel in Melville, noted Alzheimer’s disease activist, commentator and blogger Allan Vann was recognized with the organization’s Robert and Marjorie Schreibman Family Caregiving Award. “Allan Vann is the consummate advocate for patients and families coping with Alzheimer’s disease,” said Long Island Alzheimer’s Foundation Executive Director Fred Jenny. “Drawing on his personal experience, Allan gives voice as well as invaluable support to other caregivers, helping them in profound ways to better navigate the daunting course of living with the effects of this disease.”
The annual day-long Coping & Caring Conference offered family caregivers and professionals alike the newest information, techniques, strategies and resources, along with a diversity of speakers including physicians, elder-law attorneys, stress-reduction specialists, and a panel of experienced family caregivers. More than 50 exhibitors presented products and services, and participants had extensive opportunities to network and share practical tips and coping strategies.
Dr. G. Allen Power, geriatrician, internationally recognized memory disorders expert and author of Dementia Beyond Drugs: Changing the Culture of Care, was the keynote speaker. Drs. Irving Gomolin, Mark Stecker and Michael Weinstein of Winthrop University Hospital participated in a panel on sleep disorders in dementia patients. Attorneys Penny Kassel, Ann-Margaret Carrozza, and Jack Genser participated with Certified Senior Advisor Alan Goldman a panel discussion on legal and liability issues in dementia, and wellness expert Susan Eisner presented on heart-centered self-care for caregivers. Radio personalities Steve Harper and Leeana Karlson of the K98.3 Morning Show served as masters of ceremonies.
