Welcome! Thoughts... Dear Friends,
LIAF has been blessed to have an army of volunteers supporting the staff and programs. At this time, I refl ect on the wonderful group of people who make up our Advisory Board. These dedicated professionals give their time and expertise to keep LIAF informed, forward thinking and industrious. The Advisory Board is made up of experts in the medical, legal, marketing, and entrepreneurial areas providing services to Long Island’s aging community. Please accept my gratitude for your volunteerism to LIAF on behalf of the Trustees and families we serve. As one of LIAF’s Founders, I would like to send out a sincere thank you to all of our volunteers who are still with us and to those that have moved on. As we continue to celebrate our 20th Anniversary it is a Tribute to remember all the fi ne people who have helped make LIAF the great resource it has become. May your day be filled with great memories. My best,
Janet B. Walsh
"I would like to say Thank You to LIAF for helping me through the journey that was Alzheimer's." "Congratulations to LIAF for 20 years of amazing caring and support. You have created a family for us -- your clients and caregivers. Each day LIAF helps us to face daunting challenges and nourishes our strength to battle the darkness." - Matthew Dubiner, Chair, LIAF Client's Council
"I'm a pioneer, one of the first to enter my wife into the LIAF caregiver's class. I remember being lectured by an attractive instructor -- none other than my pal Janet Walsh. She had a pair of Levi's on..." - Anthony Lampasona, LIAF Caregiver's Council
"LIAF helped us create friendships, kinships, and gives us a forum for our voice to be heard. How fortunate we are to be able to share, care and ‘laugh' with each other." - Madelyn Dubiner, Chair, LIAF Caregiver's Council
"Laughter is among the many benefi ts to mind and spirit available at LIAF. Laughter with new friends -- it softens the sting of the friends who fade away from fear that dementia is contagious." - Leslie Burke, LIAF Caregiver's Council
“Best wishes to LIAF! Over the last 20 years, you have addressed the unmet needs of Alzheimer’s caregivers, educated health care professionals and provided meaningful activities and programs for hundreds of Alzheimer victims residing in our communities. Your achievements have been recognized throughout the US. All of us look forward to pursuing our common goal in the next decades, helping conquer Alzheimer disease.” - Gisele Wolf-Klein, MD LIAF Medical Advisory Board
“It has been a privilege to be associated with LIAF for the last decade. The reach of the Geriatric Psychiatry Program at Zucker Hillside/North Shore-LIJ has been greatly extended through our collaboration with LIAF; together enabling more Alzheimer’s disease patients and caregivers to be served. Personally, having the opportunity to work with LIAF and its committed board and staff - especially current Executive Director, Pattie Gallatin - has enriched my career. Through their actions and leadership, Janet Walsh and Steve Walsh have taught me about the power of fi erce advocacy and personal commitment on behalf of a greater good. Their example and their friendship are very meaningful to me and to many others invested in helping demented patients and their families. Thank you LIAF and Congratulations!!” - Blaine Greenwald, MD LIAF Medical Advisory Board
“I first found out about LIAF almost 15 years ago when I met Ed Pores, Scientifi c Advisory Board Member. As a neurologist treating Alzheimer’s patients, I initiated and completed a study using the nutritional supplement Huperzine A. Ed graciously invited me to address a group at LIAF, and from that point on my interests in and admiration for LIAF, its founders, trustees, staff and clients has grown. Years later, I met the wonderful Sue Raven and her husband, Dr. Fred Raven. Imagine my delight when I discovered that Sue was one of the original founders of LIAF, with Janet Walsh! Sue and Fred are now dear friends and I can see how, with her sensitivity, caring and spirituality, Sue assisted Janet in starting this outstanding organization. Congratulations on a job well done! Happy 20th!” - Alan A. Mazurek, MD LIAF Medical Advisory Board
"Congratulations to LIAF for 20 years of service to the Alzheimer's community. As a long standing member of the Legal Advisory Committee I am proud to have contributed my efforts to help the organization succeed in its endeavors and I continue to be awed and inspired by the hard work of the many wonderful people involved with LIAF.” - Ellen Makofsky, Esq. A special "thank you" to Dr. Linda Levine-Madori and the NYS Office for the Aging, who invited members of the LIAF staff to participate in a training in the TTAP Method. The Therapeutic Thematic Arts Programming for Older Adults (TTAP Method©) was developed by two-time fulbright scholar, researcher, author, Dr. Linda Levine-Madori. It was recognized as "Best Practice" approach to training those serving the aging population through the New York State Office of Children and Family Services in conjunction with the Office on Aging.
