LIAF began its celebration of its 20th Anniversary in August 2007, by reinventing much of what we produce, including our newsletter and our web site. Our 20th Anniversary emblem and tag line "Lighting the Way, Lightening the Burden" also made its debut. We commenced 20th Anniversary special events with the Liberty Basketball game on August 19, honoring LIAF Founder Janet B. Walsh before the 4th quarter of the game, for her vision and leadership in establishing LIAF. Founder Janet B. Walsh detailed the reasons she and four other women caregivers began LIAF 20 years ago in our Fall 2007 LIAFline newsletter. To read her article, click on this link. With each issue of this coming year's newsletter, we will feature articles and photographs to commemorate LIAF's history. We have erected a 20th Anniversary banner on the lawn in front of the LIAF Headquarters building in Port Washington, and in 2008, we plan to have a banner on Main Street in Port Washington to announce our Anniversary to the community. In October 2007, we partnered with Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories and Eisai Inc. to host a free lecture at the Laboratory, on "Understanding Alzheimer's Disease," given by Dr. Robert Malinow, Professor of Neuroscience at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, who received an "Excellence in Medical Research" Award from LIAF in 2004. In November, we will commemorate National Alzheimer's Disease Awareness Month by hosting our Remembrance Ball, this year honoring LIAF Trustee Peter Scotese, and our Candle Lighting, in honor and in memory of our LIAF loved ones. Stay tuned for more 20th Anniversary festivities as we move through the balance of 2007 and into 2008.
